Fat, Femme, and Queer
Hi! I am Sofia!
As a fat, femme, queer, person of color, I have the lived experience and understanding of what it means to move through a world that can feel like it was not designed for you. I am also a multiracial person who understands the difficulties of navigating the intersection of multiple marginalized identities. From literally not fitting into “standard” seating comfortably, to having to mark “other” as my race on most forms, I understand what it can be like to experience seemingly endless microaggressions in everyday life. I enjoy working with clients from unique and diverse cultures and backgrounds, clients who struggle with their body image, and clients who identify with the LGBTGEQ+ community and I have a specialized education in working with clients who have visible and/or invisible disabilities. I get what it can be like to feel that society does not have a space for you and I know hard it can be to create this space for yourself.
Utilizing lots of different inclusive counseling interventions that are oriented in Feminist Theory, Queer Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Theory, and Mindfulness practice, I love guiding clients toward developing an accepting and respectful relationship with themselves. Using stress management strategies, self-compassion training, expressive techniques, and self-care management I enjoy guiding clients to create space for themselves and their unique needs. I see myself as a small piece of the bridge to cultivating your own self-understanding and self-love.
My counseling style is open, supportive, strength-based, and warm. When entering into a counseling session with me, you can expect to have all of yourself respected and heard. You can expect to be heard with compassion and met where you are in your own personal journey toward mental and emotional well-being. You can expect me to hold space for all of who you are and to explore what it feels like for you to move through this world. I will make suggestions to help guide you on your own path toward your therapeutic goals and will find strategies that work for your specific and completely unique needs.
I think more than ever, having a space that is for you - all of you – is vital to move through life feeling stable and supported. Therapy can be that space to hold all of your identities with compassion and respect while also helping you work toward your goals. It can be scary to seek therapy because it requires you to be vulnerable in asking for help. There is strength in vulnerability and power in self-compassion.
Therapy is meant to be a space of your own to guide you on your unique path toward connecting more deeply and meaningfully to your self and your truth. I will be honored and grateful to be a part of your path.
